Quite interestingly, Foucault was initially trained as a phenomenologist. So in some way, they are not that far apart. After all, Sartre, a contemporary of Foucault, was still a phenomenologist in post-War France and the US. I like Foucault's interpretation of how history should be done. I would side with him.
